in boston, what was billed as the romney victory situation, now perhaps the saddest room in the country. peter. >> brian, a couple days ago, told us, barack obama's fire wall in ohio was burning. the obama campaign extinguished the fire. take a look around the room right now you can see the sober faces of disappointment here in boston. they knew that ohio was critical to a victory tonight. despite the fact that florida and virginia were still on the board they recognized as soon as ohio went up on the screens that this meant president obama would remain president of the united states. governor romney has been reviewing, watching the returns with his family, alongside his wife ann, five sons, their wives, and 16 of the 18 grandchildren. a short distance away from where we are at the convention center here in boston. as soon as they get the news which obviously they have gotten as well on the screens that they're watching as well, we are anticipating somepoint this evening we'll hear what would be a concession speech from governor romney. remember when he was on his plane earlier today we

, nancy. jan crawford has been covering the romney campaign. she is in boston tonight. jan? >> well, scott, governor romney just landed here about an hour ago after making campaign stops in that key state of ohio and in pennsylvania. he talked to reporters on the way back on the plane and he said he felt good about this campaign. they hadn't left anything in the locker room and that he thinks they're going to win. he said he just finished his victory speech. he's not written a concession speech. now, the mood inside the campaign tonight, scott, is one of cautious optimism, i'd say. but there is a little bit of nervousness and here's why: campaign sources that i'm talking with tonight say they are encouraged by the high numbers of republican turnout they're seeing in these swing states like ohio, florida, virginia. they believe that will outperform john mccain in 2008. that's the key to this election. they really had to run up the score in those areas. but here's where the nervousness comes in. they're also seeing some of the president's turnout in some of those democratic areas like in nor

will see him in chicago. mitt romney will be in boston tomorrow night. hoping for a different outcome than john mccain had four years ago at that sad rally in arizona. before romney gets to boston he will still be on the trail in ohio and in pennsylvania. before the nation renders a verdict on not just a president, but a presidency whose achievements have been seen as almost beside the point in assessing whether the president gets a second term, it's the virtue of this campaign or it's the damning criticism of this campaign to know that this decision has been set up for the american people as if it has very little to do with what this president has done with his last four years. it's not been about his record. it's been about a character kature of his record. and that's why that list of things that have happened in the past four years maybe seems unfamiliar. you'd think after a campaign this long, we could memorize that list, but that's not what it's been about. if barack obama gets a second term, given the achievements of this past four years, he will likely be enshrined as being one of t

, around the corner. us bank. ♪ neil: all right. this is from the headquarters in boston, massachusetts. they're worried, but they're not giving up hope. obviously it's still a close race. listed look at the cave -- electoral tally as a stance. right now it is even. but the reason why we say it is primitive, it's even. the next round of those states at 11:00 p.m. are california, hawaii, idaho, oregon, and washington. those are all states that the president is expected to win. that would be about 70 -- actually 82 electoral votes that he could pick up in the 11:00 p.m. hour or shortly thereafter. so now your up to about 245. i have not even counted ohio where he is leading, not prohibitively, but leading command that would bring you to 263, within seven of winning the 270 you need. and then you understand that if your mitt romney you have to when virtually every single other state. that's what we mean by prohibitive math. looking at that same math. what do you think? >> i think it looks bleak for the republicans. i am not happy about it, but i am praying. i have all my fingers and toes c
